John Middleton & The Broadway win at Arts & Business Awards
Friday 19th November
Broadway chairman John Middleton wins Board Member of the Year at 32nd Arts & Business Awards.
Last night John Middleton took away the top prize for good governance for his key role at the Broadway, Barking in a ceremony at The Museum of London attended by Culture Minister Ed Vaizey. And it was John’s strategic vision of the community of Barking and Dagenham at the heart of everything the Broadway does that clinched the award amongst a very strong field.
Under John’s stewardship, the Broadway has developed its role as a multi-disciplinary cultural hub and is becoming recognised for leading social change. Essential to this development was John’s appoint of Karena Johnson as CEO/Artistic Director. Improvement to the range and quality of work staged, re-branding and a diversified funding strategy followed. A 30% increase in black, ethnic minority and refugee audiences was just one key success of his term and the Broadway is currently enjoyed its most successful season ever.
Hosted by novelist and broadcaster Kate Mosse, the evening saw John Middleton and the Broadway awarded alongside some prestigious arts organizations and businesses including the National Theatre, the British Museum, HSBC, Classic FM and Travelex.
Colin Tweedy, Chief Executive of Arts & Business, said: “Right now arts organisations need outstanding leadership to ensure their survival. John provided that and much more when he put regenerating the community at the heart of his strategy for the organisation.”
The judges were impressed by John’s personal commitment, enthusiasm and leadership style. He clearly exercised judgement about when to intervene, when to step back and when to take calculated risks.
Barry O'Dwyer, Managing Director, Retail Life and Pensions from Prudential UK & Europe, said:
“Strong leadership builds strong organisations. It is fantastic to see such impact from an individual who rolled up his sleeves and delivered real support to an arts organisation at the right time.”
John Middleton said ‘the Broadway is an amazing venue with a fantastic team. With our partners we deliver great art which improves the quality of life in Barking. This award is really in recognition of our joint effort.’
The Broadway’s CEO/Artistic Director, Karena Johnson, said ‘John has been a fantastic Chairman and richly deserves this recognition. We deliver excellent, professional art. See for yourself by coming to our pantomime, Snow White, which is our fastest selling production ever.’
