Why Support Us?
With your vital support, we can work with more locally based artists, produce more new plays and offer more education and participation opportunities to a wider range of people.
The Broadway is a registered charity that is proud to earn 50% of its income. But we work within a community that has a high degree of deprivation and many local children, young people and families would not be able to enjoy or participate in performing arts with us if we can't keep our prices low and accessible. Each year we need to raise an additional £ 500,000 from individuals, corporate supporters and trusts to help us do this whilst keeping the quality of the artistic offering high.
Artistic Program
The Broadway is an award winning arts centre developing a unique mix of fresh new theatre and high quality entertainment including the best in comedy, dance and music.
Participation
We offer a bespoke programme of extra-curricular work with young people and adults. Projects are designed to provide work experience, volunteering and formal training opportunities to raise aspirations and combat poverty and deprivation in the area. We want to strengthen our services by enabling more children’s work to be accessed directly by families rather than through nurseries and educational institutions. Intergenerational socializing is proven to support the acquisition of greater social skills, increase educational attainment and facilitate a process of empowerment.
We want to widen our offer to older people with regular activities including tea dances, singing and drama club and matinee shows.
Social Cohesion
The arts have a proven role in developing social cohesion. Barking is one of the fastest growing, most diverse populations in the country. There is a need to bring people from different backgrounds together to increase mutual understanding and respect, reduce social exclusion, and promote good community relations. With well documented tensions in the area building bridges and mutual understanding between communities is still a high priority. The arts are best placed to do this through creative social encounters.
